Missouri City has completed its redistricting process. At the Regular City Council Meeting on May 2, the Council approved Map C Revised with a 4-3 vote (At-Large Position #1 Councilmember Vashaundra Edwards, At-Large Position #2 Councilmember Lynn Clouser and District A Councilmember Monica Riley voted against approving Map C Revised).
The new district lines will help the city achieve more equal population numbers in each district by addressing the growth in District D and the lower population in District C.
Under the Missouri City Charter, redistricting must be done at least once every 10 years. City objectives in undertaking this effort included maintaining existing Council districts; maintaining traditional neighborhoods; providing contiguous (connecting) territory; and establishing relatively equal population (less than a 10 percent deviation between districts).
The City received more than 50 written comments from the public, attended four (4) homeowner’s association meetings, and held five (5) virtual meetings, three (3) public hearings, one (1) in-person workshop, and one (1) in-person district meeting.
Redistricting will not:
- eliminate any majority minority district
- change the ability of a resident to vote for at-large offices
- change a home’s location in a particular county
- change school district/school zoning
- change neighborhood location/neighborhood needs
- change City tax requirements
The following subdivisions have changed City Council districts:
- Meadowcreek and Pebble Brook are now part of District A
- All of Creekmont, Newpoint Estates, Shipman’s Cove, and all of Olympia Estates are now part of District B
- Waterbrook West, Sienna Municipal Utility Districts 6 and 7, and Villas at Sienna Apartments are now part of District C.
Although the new map makes certain changes, the maximum difference in the racial demographics between the City’s previous districts and the new districts is about 2 percent.
