Juneteenth celebrations across the nation are being hosted in the wake of the historic vote of Congressional lawmakers in Washington, D.C. to establish June 19 as a federal holiday. Moving forward, cities across the country will be able to commemorate Juneteenth National Independence Day as part of their festivities.
This year, at home, the Missouri City Juneteenth Celebration Foundation (MCJCF) has already hosted a number of events and others are planned. Here is a rundown:
“2021 MCJCF Kick Off ”
The Missouri City Juneteenth VIP Reception kicked off the celebration Friday evening June 11 at B’s Wine Bar.
“2021 MCJCF Scholarship Golf Tournament”
The MCJCF Scholarship Golf Tournament was held Monday, June 14 at the Quail Valley Golf Club located at 2880 La Quinta Dr. from 8:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. This tournament raises funds for outstanding graduates to receive scholarships in Missouri City and the Fort Bend County area. The scholarships will be awarded at the Community Service Awards Gala, today, Thursday, June 17.
The remaining Juneteenth events for the week:
Community Service Awards Gala: Today, Thursday, June 17 from 6:00 – 9:30 p.m. at the City Centre at Quail Valley, 2880 La Quinta Dr. The MCJCF will recognize the following outstanding individuals within the Missouri City/Fort Bend County area, Tony Sherman, Dr. Linda Coleman, Courtney Johnson-Rose and former Councilmember Jerry Wyatt. The Keynote Speaker for the evening will be Spencer Tillman, a former professional football player who played for the Houston Oilers and San Francisco 49ers. Tillman is also a sports broadcaster and motivational speaker.

“Juneteenth Family Night Out (Movie in the Park)”
Family Night Out (Movie in the Park): Friday, June 18 at Hunters Glen Park, 1340 Independence Blvd. There will be a variety of family-fun activities, entertainment and a movie. The featured movie is “Black Panther” and will begin at dusk. This is a free event and open to the public. Be sure to bring lawn chairs.

MCJCF “One Miles of Smiles” Parade
“One Mile of Smiles” Parade: This parade will proceed along Texas Parkway beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 19. This is a free event and open to the public. Road closures will be in place on both directions on Texas Parkway from Court Road to Independence Boulevard from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

“Enjoying the MCJCF Concert in the Park”
Concert in the Park: The concert will begin after the “One Mile of Smiles” Parade Saturday, June 19 in Hunters Glen Park, located at 1340 Independence Blvd. The concert will feature Jaye Hammer, Bel-Ami, Evette Busby, Kollette, Leroy Allen and DJ Ice Cold. This is a free event and open to the public. Be sure to bring lawn chairs!
