MCTX Council Members Confirm Civil Service Commission Appointees

Happening

At their Monday, Dec. 21 Regular Virtual Meeting, City Councilmembers confirmed the appointments of Wanda Johnson, Jacqueline Watson and Gregory Williams to the Fire Fighters’ and Police Officers’ Civil Service Commission.

The three residents were appointed by Odis Jones, CEO/City Manager, after an in-depth interview and review process. “The citizens adopted a civil service system for police officers and firefighters, and the City has taken the first step in that process by choosing a three-member Civil Service Commission that was appointed by my office and authorized by City Council,” Jones said.

City Manager Jones further explained that “residents serving on the new Commission will monitor Missouri City’s personnel practices relating to the hiring, firing and administration of disciplinary action of police and fire civil service personnel, and will ensure that the provisions of Chapter 143 of the Texas Local Government Code are enforced.”

The requirements to serve on the Commission were as follows:

  • be of good moral character;
  • be a United States citizen;
  • be a resident of the municipality who has resided in the municipality for more than three years;
  • be over 25 years of age; and
  • not have held a public office within the preceding three years.

Johnson will serve a 3-year-term, Watson will serve a 2-year term and Williams will serve a 1-year term. After this initial appointment, the commissioners will serve staggered three (3)-year terms with the term of one member expiring each year. Meetings of the Commission will be scheduled as needed to conduct the business of the Commission.
