The Freedom Tree & Diversity
By: Leonard Freeman
Location: City Hall Lobby, 1522 Texas Pkwy.
The City commissioned Freeman to paint a mural highlighting a key moment of history and unveiled the artwork during the 2022 Black History Month celebrations. Freeman was immediately drawn to the idea of a Freedom Tree piece because there is so much history to tell. “In 1865, the Emancipation Proclamation was read to the slaves on a plantation here in Missouri City,” said Freeman. “It was a moment that set people free. I wanted to focus on the history of the tree. We have people from every community, every ethnic group, every cultural group,” said Freeman, who was very proud of the city’s diversity.
